Dr. Henri Borlant: Survivant et Témoin (Survivor and Witness)

The documentary film, in French with English subtitles, was the product of a year-long independent project between senior student Catherine Wulff and her French teacher, Barbara P. Barnett. Dr. Borlant is author of the autobiography Merci d’avoir survécu (Thank you for surviving).

Barbara P. Barnett, Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques, is an author/filmmaker, teacher of French and recipient of the Dorothy Ludwig Excellence in Teaching award from the American Association of Teachers of French. She received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1993 to conduct interviews in France with French Holocaust survivors, members of the Resistance, historians and Christian rescuers, and has subsequently directed six films about Nazi-occupied France, five as of this writing (November 2014) with honor students from The Agnes Irwin School.

The Documentary
The work is a tribute to a French Holocaust survivor who was deported to Auschwitz at age fifteen, with his father and two of his siblings, survived three years in a series of concentration camps and became a physician after the war. This remarkable man was determined to finish high school and attend medical school despite enormous challenges and health issues. Despite the loss of his father, brother and sister, and several bouts of tuberculosis, Henri Borlant persevered with his education, became a doctor and devoted his life to “bearing witness” and sharing his moving story with young people so that the next generation will remember the past and work toward creating a better world. Suitable for the general public, high school and university.
